Jane is a 23 year old woman. Jane was involved in a motor vehicle accident in Mombasa after which she was a paraplegic. She was getting reasonable medical care in Mombasa but when she moved home to her family in Nakuru she was getting no care. I was asked to go and visit her in her home and see if we could help with her care. When I first saw Jane she was lying in darkness with burns to the back of her legs (someone had put her in her wheelchair when it had been sitting in the sun and the rubber straps burnt her legs). She had pressure sores on her heels because the mattress she was lying on was very hard and her catheter had not been changed for months.
Our wonderful nurse Rosemary that works for Kenya health has been giving ongoing care to Jane. Her burns and pressure sores are healed and her catheter is being changed as needed.
Physically Jane is now making great improvements. She is having physio twice a week and has been given a new wheelchair. Jane now has a sponsor arranged through Kenya Health who is paying for her to go to university so she can have qualifications that will allow her to work and be independent.
